One of the marks of a good accountant is client retention. Mike Boorman, managing director of West One UK Ltd is a perfect example: he’s been a client of Burgess Hodgson for more than 20 years, the last four of which have been with his current business – and he’s not in any hurry to move!
West One specialises in providing high quality domestic interiors to the London office market, maintaining and servicing a wide range of professional service companies’ offices. “Our client base tends to comprise lawyers, accountants and other service-related professionals,” explains Mike, “many of whom have very exacting standards.”
And, despite the tough economic backdrop, West One’s client base has grown over the last two years, with the majority of new clients coming through personal recommendation. The company predominantly provides joinery services, although it does get involved in other specialist areas due to its management and setting out expertise.
Mike originally turned to Burgess Hodgson when the company he was working for at the time had some financial difficulties – and his bank referred the Canterbury firm. “It’s been a Godsend really,” says Mike. “The level of service we’ve received over the last 20 years has been excellent – and continues to be so.”
Burgess Hodgson provides a full accountancy service to West One, as well as payroll, financial and budget planning, even down to chasing bad debt. “It’s a very comprehensive service,” says Mike. “In fact, Burgess Hodgson provides everything that we need as a business in terms of financial operation.”
And Mike is convinced that Burgess Hodgson goes well beyond the norm in terms of its service provision. “It is very proactive on our behalf,” he says. “The firm always takes a very positive approach and is extremely professional. We would recommend them – in fact, we have recommended them to numerous other businesses who have subsequently become Burgess Hodgson clients.”
The quality and expertise that Burgess Hodgson provides has also enabled West One to develop its business, at a time when many others in the industry are struggling. “We have a very close relationship,” says Mike. “Burgess Hodgson is very helpful in every area.
“That’s not to say that the market hasn’t been difficult – it has,” says Mike. “But we are slightly protected from some of the vagaries in the market because with a client base of professional companies, many of whom are in the legal sector, it tends to be more immune to the financial difficulties experienced elsewhere. It seems that lawyers are always busy!
“We use Burgess Hodgson for all types of financial advice and we find that being associated with the firm also pays dividends when you want to talk to your bank. The firm’s reputation precedes itself – and gives the banks added confidence in your business.
“In fact, the avenues it opens up having Burgess Hodgson as your accountants is worthwhile in itself.”
