While 2012 might be a ‘jubilee’ year for the reigning monarch, Leydon Lettings (www.leydonlettings.co.uk) is celebrating its own jubilee having racked up 25 years of letting student accommodation in Canterbury.
The business – which began life in 1987 – is dedicated to renting student houses and has developed a strong reputation for modern thinking and high standards during quarter of a century of trading.
Nine years ago, however, managing director Bob Leydon had reached a crossroads in the business. Recognising the need for some external input from a forward-thinking adviser, he asked a fellow landlady to recommend an accountant. “You need Burgess Hodgson,” was the immediate reply.
It has proved an extremely successful partnership. With Burgess Hodgson’s help, Leydon Lettings’ income has increased tenfold in the last nine years – and 2012 promises to see no let up in the business’s expansion. If anything, Leydon Lettings is now poised for even greater success.
“Having enjoyed a few bumper years, we are now consolidating in readiness for our next strategy,” said Mr Leydon.
On advice from Burgess Hodgson, the business now also manages properties for other landlords. And, following significant input and consultation with the practice, Leydon Lettings bought its first premises recently at 49-50 Castle Street Canterbury.
Speed and efficiency are two of the key attributes Mr Leydon praises. Burgess Hodgson normally finalises Leydon Lettings’ accounts within two months of the end of each financial year. “The firm’s speedy response enables us time to budget for taxation, development and expansion,” he adds
Another key factor in the relationship is the firm’s ready availability. “Burgess Hodgson is always available to advise with affirmation or caution,” says Mr Leydon. “In fact, he has helped with everything from staff PAYE – with all the economic ramifications involved – to a range of personal matters.”
Mr Leydon is in no doubt as to the positive effects that Burgess Hodgson has had on his business. “We came to Burgess Hodgson with a dozen rented properties utilising single entry accounts; we now own 50 houses and a couple of shops utilising double entry accounts.
“This year marks our quarter century of letting accommodation. With Burgess Hodgson behind me I am confident of continuing success.”
