The government has confirmed the new National Minimum Wage rates, effective April 2020;
This sees the National Minimum Wage (NMW) increasing by 6.5%, and the National Living Wage increasing by 6.2%. Government is calling it the “biggest cash increase ever”.
Employers should ensure that all employees are paid the NMW, or above. Paying NMW is a legal requirement, failure to pay can result in fines from HMRC, which can be substantial.
As 2020 is a leap year, employers should pay particular attention to checking NMW for those that are salaried close to, or at the NMW, due to there being an extra day within the year.
